      Your language choices are key to engaging learners, and there are some simple tricks you can try to keep learners onboard such as:

      1. Write in a warm and friendly tone and talk to your learners, like you're having a conversation 
      2. Use interesting facts to stimulate your learner's interest
      3. Use humour where you can 
      4. Ask questions to prompt learners to engage and to integrate prior knowledge
      5. Keep your language simple (not to be confused with 'dumbing down' content, by the way!)
      Did you know? Language across public services had become so inaccessible and unengaging that in 2022 the Plain Language Act was introduced. The Act requires public services to use clear, concise and well organised language appropriate to the intended audience. Hooray! Let's all do this!

    • Pre-empting questions

      Another trick online is to remember that learners in an asynchronous online environment can't just ask you in the moment to expand on unfamiliar terms or acronyms. We don't want to leave learners wondering if they've missed something, so try to pre-empt their questions within your content. 

      Expand specialised terms or acronyms that might interrupt the learning flow. If there's any doubt, keep expanding terminology for longer than you think you need to. You can use glossaries, notes or refer/link learners to other content.
